Distintermediation: The future
Did anyone in the last panel mention that one of the challenges facing “big media” is the disintermediation of information and authority?
First of all, experts are not restricted to major media sources. Not only can Kos become a political authority, but he can do it at a far lesser margin–and probably be content with less salary–that a CNN pundit.
In addition, readers are looking beyond big media to see what the reaction to news is–what public opinion holds. While CNN or Google News may be the best source for news of what happened in the Madrid bombings, Technorati and Feedster offer immediate ways to see what other citizens are saying–and what related stories they are linking to.
Big media will need to find ways to integrate these capabilities–or lose audience time and attention because of them.
