Jeff on storytelling: “People want to play a part in their stories.” Books were seen in the past as interactive. With video and other digital images being more interactive, the book now seems passive.
Roger Black: In web, “me media” you are stitching together your own story. Media may be the problem because it denies that the storytelling isn’t good anymore, but it that is the problem — where are the stories today — “hardly anything left of newspapers today.”
Andrew: “Who is the storyteller for our society?” It was books, but what are the new storytelling metaphors evolving today?
Take book sites, and notice that the stories remain whole, but look at all the reviews and interaction “additional dimensions of storytelling” that people want to add. And especially stories that the traditional media might not think are worthwhile.
Black notes that the media obfuscate what is going on in the war, for example. In the 60s you saw the action of the war. Today the news media just show talking heads. John says that there hasn’t been any important news for his gen — the OJ trial, celebrities with clothes emergencies– nothing of interest to his generation is found on TV, newspaper journalism.
